Amarillo, Texas

 Friday 4th May 2023

As we were only staying at Palo Duro Canyon for one week we were limited on days to check out the surrounding tourists sites so John took a day off. We first drove to see Cadillac Ranch. I'm sure you may have seen pictures of  the famous cars that are standing on their noses in the ground. I had imagined more of a park setting but they were in some mud in a field on the side of the road with a truck and trailer selling spray paints and merchandise which was a bit of a let down.

Due to the heavy rains the cars were in a muddy lake so you could not get to them. It  was a shame you could not spray paint them but it was great to get photos without people in the way!

The highway concrete barrier and the road have been spray painted too.

We then drove into Amarillo. OK can you sing the song, we were singing it all week! The Peter Kaye version.

There was a lot to do in the area but as we had left Morgan in the rv, we were on the clock, so headed to Route 66 Historic District for a little wander. This part of Route 66 was a narrow street with lots of antique stores, bars and restaurants. There were some great murals on the sides of buildings and there are many more throughout the city to find.

Of course I found a bakery! It was a great place with a wide vegan selection which was extra nice.

It was now time to leave the Texas panhandle area. We had stayed in Texas for eleven weeks and were eager to drive to another State.
