Palo Duro Canyon Texas part 2

 1st May 2023

I previously mentioned there is a small café/store near the rv campsite, behind it a local bird watcher group had set up a viewing area with a small water feature. We have looked at the birds a few times but have not seen anything very special. There were guys with super duper cameras and long lenses clicking frames like they were the paparazzi following the Kardashians! We ended up seeing more fun birds around our rv!

A pair of Bullock's Orioles set up camp around our ladder on the back of the rv! We think there is a juvenile too. They sat on the ladder and tapped on the window on and off all day.

We were hearing the gobble gobble of turkey in the bushes then out he came to see us.

And we saw a roadrunner! Beep beep! He was very well camouflaged in the brush and a bit far away so not the best pic.

We had major trouble with moths. Next to the rv was a big Sand Cherry shrub that housed hundreds of moths that would invade the rv each night. We could not find how they were getting in but each night John would be killing fifteen or twenty moths, it was like a horror movie. He has an electric zapper racket so all you could hear was zap zap then smell fried moth - yuk.

We enjoyed some small walks around the park in the evening when John finished work for the day. I may have made a bit of a boob lol. Saw a path marked on the map near the rv that was not too long, let's walk a little bit, see how we go as it's 1.5 miles each way and we still needed to have dinner. The trail began at the Pioneer Amphitheater that shows a musical about the history of Texas. The show runs June until August.

The small walk ended up being a vertical scramble up the canyon wall. I was doing ok but we had Morgan with us as it was meant to be a small walk. At some points the path was only a couple feet wide, made up of loose shingle with a very scary drop on one side and I was worried she would step off and take me with her so we stopped two thirds up, had a sit to watch the views, then came back down. The views were amazing and worth the scare!

There's our house way down there!
That's our rv!
Wow view. The black is the amphitheater car park

There were some very cool glamping tents near us. I talked to some ladies who had spent a night in one who said they were fab though they did not have bathroom facilities so they had to walk along to our bath house. For $299 a night I would like a loo! They have a big front porch with BBQ and a hammock and inside are two king size beds, 2 pull out beds, a microwave and small fridge.

We had some big storms pass through Tuesday and Wednesday nights so they closed the trails again on Thursday. Glad we hiked The Lighthouse on Sunday. We had walked the trail near the rv on Wednesday evening and it was already very muddy with big puddles in areas and with the trails made of red clay that turns to slippery mud very quickly I can see why they get closed.
