Rifle Gap State Park Colorado

Saturday 15th July we left Crawford and drove 138 miles to Rifle Gap State Park. There was two route options, we took the scenic mountain route. Was a beautiful but slow drive with no gas stations or towns to stop at for most of the drive.

As we driving we saw a few cars pulled in at the side of the road and saw there was some Falls. Luckily there was a big pull in on our side of the road so we stopped for a quick photograph.

We arrived at the park and were getting set up when I saw red liquid pouring out of one of the rv legs. The hydraulic pipe had come completely undone. Luckily John was able to get it stuck together temporarily so we could get the legs lowered and unhitched.

Considering Rifle Gap was our twenty third stop we have done very well not to have had any issues with the rv up to now. We called a mobile rv repair company and they came out a few days later and fixed it. We had considered tackling the job ourselves but thought replenishing the hydraulic system may have been complicated and need a specialist but when we watched what the guy did we think if this issue arose again we could fix it.

Rifle Gap State Park is set on.......yes you guessed again, how did you know??! A reservoir!

The 360 acre reservoir was constructed in 1964 near the abandoned tiny town of Austin. The  project was completed in 1968 and provides irrigation water to farmers and ranchers in the area.

We had a great big pull through concrete site with full hook ups, a covered picnic table and a view down the hill to the lake and the majestic Grand Hogback.

The only thing I did not like about the park was the road system, it was very narrow for two cars to pass easily on steep hills and there were some blind corners that added to me not wanting to drive it.

There was a swim beach at the end of the lake but we had to drive to it along a very sketchy gravel road but once there it was very nice with shallow water and a sandy base. We avoided going on the weekend as it was too busy so we just went after work.

Time for a float

Dam and Rifle Gap

We had some toasty days
